Berkeley is known for being on the forefront of the vegan movement. From banning fur to protesting slaughterhouses, they are moving mountains. Now this Sunday they are hosting a 100% vegan Berkeley Earth Day where there will be dozens of vegan vendors, a sustainable food court, music, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, and eco-friendly products. With sustainability in mind, activists came together to make this earth day happen bringing together veganism and environmentalism. This is a great opportunity for environmental activists to learn about the vegan side of sustainability and to try some amazing vegan food and wares. All people hoping to learn how we can save the environment together are welcome.
Veggie Food Court
Join other like minded people in enjoying all types of veggie food such as Chalk Hill Cookery offering their take on gently cooked and living foods plant-based cuisine with their Young Coconut Noodles, Oyster Mushroom Ceviche, Sprouted Sunflower Falafel or their signature Cashew Cheese Ravioli., Om Sabor with their Jackfruit Pozole Rojo, Al Pastor Burritos, Cochinita Pibil Nachos, or Poblano Chile VerdeTacos and The Veg Hub with their legendary plates and veg meat sandwiches such as the vegan philly cheese steak, chicken melt, and spinach mushroom melt.
Wild and Scenic Film Festival
The festival includes three sessions drawn from a collection of films from the 16th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival. This festival is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire activism.
In the Marketplace, there will be indigenous crafts from Mexico, clothing from recycled plastic bottles (your stuff?), and PLACE (People Linking Art, Community, and Ecology) will be bringing a pottery wheel for hands-on demonstrations and selling their upcycled crafts. In the main lobby, learn how you can help save the planet with Caboo bamboo and sugarcane products, ecological charcoal toothpaste from Treat Yourself bodycare and organic produce and vegan meals delivered to your door. There is also all the vegan grocery store and non-profit Animal Place’s Vegan Republic and many other non-profits like sanctuaries, rescues, and environmentally inspiring agencies.
It is important to support a vegan earth day, because as far as we know this is the only 100% vegan earth day on the West Coast (Central Florida has a vegan earth day too). The activists of Berkeley hope to inspire the big Earth Days hosted in LA, New York, San Francisco, and San Diego and to transition their events to a truly environmental friendly earth day, one that is plant based. The Anonymous for the Voiceless activists will be doing the Cube of Truth at Earth Day in San Diego to help try to transition their Earth Day. By coming to show your support they hope to grow to make next year even bigger!
